This unit is simply two temperature thermostats on one box. It is perfect for cntrolling two heaters independently. When a specific temperature gradient is required this is the unit to use. It will control two heaters with a maximum of 300 watts for each channel. This enables each heater to be set at a different temperature, even in th esame vivarium. One channel can control the general background heat, whilst the other channel can control a "hot spot" to give the reptiles that essential temperature gradient that is so important to their husbandry. It can alternatively be used to control two seperate heaters in two seperate cages.

Sophisticated pulse proportional thermostat, ideal for controlling higher power ceramic heaters. The function of this thermostat is far more sopisticated than the simpler on/Off switching devices. It will very accurately control heaters and has a maximum load of 600 Watts. A normal thermostatswitches a heater on full power until the set temperature is achieved. It then switches the heater off completely until the temperature drops below the set value, when the cycle starts over again. The gap between the heater being switched on and then off is called hyseresis. It is between these points that the accuracy of the controller is assessed. The pulse proportional thermostat pulses electricity to the heater.
The sequence of events are as follows: The temperature is set on the dial. The cage and heater are cold so the heater are cold so the heater is on full power. As the temperature in the cage nears the set temperature the unit cuts the power down to pulses. The degree of pulse (i.e. the ammount of time the heater is on and the ammount of time it is off) is dependent on the cage temperature. In the early stages of approaching the set temperature the 'on' pulses will be long and the 'off' time will be short. In a correctly set up cage, as the desired temperature is neared, the 'on' pulses become shorter until the cycle levels at approximately 50% on and 50% off. In a cage where the only powered enough to maintain the temperature set. It does not have to continually the animals as the heater rarely, if ever, need to run at full power.

With many species it is important to give them a cycle of warm day time temperatures and cool night temperatures. Many species would experience this in their natural environment.
Through an additional mains input lead and via a time switch or a Habistat 'Night Eye' (not included) the thermostat will lower the set temperature for a period of time set on the time switch or controlled by the 'Night Eye'. When used with the 'Night Eye' the light levels will be sensed and the temperature will automatically be switched down when it is dark, and back up again for the daytime. No more need to adjust time switches with the 'Night Eye' as it automatically adjust to seasonal changes.
The temperature drop on the thermostat can be adjusted to be anything between 5 degrees Centigrade to 15 degrees Centigrade, lower than the day time set temperature. This drop is obviously dependent on the ambient temperature where the cage is kept. The temperature cannot drop below this without the aid of a chiller or Mini fan.

The Dimming thermostat is one of the most accurate methods of temperature control and whilst it is perfect for controlling light bulbs, it can be used on almost any heaters. Unlike other Habistat thermostats, it does require a minimum load of 40 Watts, but has a maximum capacity of 600 Watts at 230 volts.
This is the only thermostat we recommend for use with incandescent light bulbs. It uses the latest technology and operates in a manner similar to the Pulse proportional thermostat. Instead of pulses of power being supplied to the heater, it is supplied with a continuous variable supply of power or voltage. In princip this has a similar effect to light dimmers or rheostats in your home.
If the Dimming thermostat is being used to control a primary basking spot, then the size of the heater needs to be engineered to the temperature required and the size of the enclosure. In other words, if the heater is too large then it will be running at a very low level. Clearly, not what is required of a basking light. If the wattage of the light bulb is reduced, then the intensity of the heat locally will be greater, or proportional.

The Night Eye will switch the day night function of the HabiStat Day/Night Pulse or Dimming thermostats on and off. It does this by sensing the light level. When it is light the day time temperature will be set and when it is dark the lower night time temperature will be activated. The difference between the on and off levels has been adjusted so that the unit does not flicker at the triggering point nor will it switch on and off due to minor variations in brightness.
The Night Eye should not be used with anything but HabiStat Day/Night Thermostats. The output plug is specifically matched to fit these thermostats. Under no circumstances should it be removed. Night Eye units will often replace the time switches that have been used to regulate the day/night cycle in vivariums.

By synchronising with natural daylight, maximum effect can be gained from the day/night function. This will include controlling the photoperiod and seasonal temperature ranges that are so important to many species reproductive cycles. Most uses will include altering the temperature range of those things that act as artificial suns, that is heaters and lights. It should also be noted that the light sensor must not be influenced by any of the lights it is controlling. This would cause a 'feed back loop' and lead to a very unstable system. Place the unit with the sensor exposed to the light source that it is to mimic. This will usually be the sun, so an obvious place to position the Night Eye is in a window. It does not have to be in direct sunlight as ordinary diffuse daylight is bright enough to effect the triggering level. Another position of use would be under a room light where it is intended that thermostatic control should be coupled with the main lighting.

Reptiles that are active at night are just as dependent upon external heat sources as their day active relatives. The major difference being they are often able to cope with temperatures that are a little lower. The Moon Switch will switch on these secondary heaters While the companion Sun Switch will switch off the higher but still necessary day time heaters and brighter lights. The Moon Switch can be used to switch on special lights that are designed for use at night. Red, Basking Spot Lamps are an example. Here red light is used to create a hot spot without the distractions white light would pose for night active creatures. The special fluorescent lamps designed to stimulate moon light are another example.
Many night active creatures need to see their prey and cannot hunt in complete darkness. Ordinary lights are, however, too bright and are avoided. The subdued light is just right to allow night active predators to spot their prey but not so bright that their natural photoperiod is confused. This means essential synchronisation involving the photoperiod are left intact, so the animal behaves and breeds normally.
